Topic description
This topic will introduce you to the concept of interpretation and its importance in tourism in terms of storytelling and understanding meanings at tourism sites. Key principles of interpretation will be discussed alongside factors such as culture, gender, age and technology which can influence interpretation. Interpretation will be viewed from a curator/developer perspective as well as a tour guide perspective.
Educational aims
The topic aims to:

  1. Establish interpretation principles and the impact of interpretation for tourism

  2. Evaluate the effectiveness of interpretation techniques for tourism sites

  3. Examine tour guiding and curator practices and trends for interpretation.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Analyse how cultural and demographic factors can influence interpretation

  2. Examine how meanings and stories are conveyed at tourism sites
