Topic description
This topic introduces the framework for festival and event design and management and investigates the concept of events as a reflection of culture. It looks at definitions, typologies and roles of festivals and events and the event industry within the community, and in the broader tourism context.

It investigates the different stages of event design, management and marketing and their practical application. It provides students with knowledge of event design and staging principles and practice for a range of indoor and outdoor events. The topic examines the history and typologies of events and event (financial and logistical) management methodology.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide students with an understanding of the role of events in the tourism industry

  • outline the principles of event design and best event management practices

  • examine the role of culture and community in the staging of festivals and events

  • research and evaluate a range of festival and event designs

  • provide students with the knowledge and skills required to design, implement and evaluate a range of event strategies
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • classify festivals and events according to contemporary definitions and Getz' typology

  • generate solutions to meet design briefs

  • identify the roles and relationships of festivals and events to the host organisation, community, state or nation and within a broader tourism context

  • demonstrate an understanding of the principles of event design and the different stages of the management and marketing of festivals and events

  • demonstrate an understanding of the global event industry and the history of festivals and events
