Topic description
This topic will provide an opportunity for in-depth study of important issues and aspects of tourism planning, management and marketing. The mains issues and aspects encompass destination image, authenticity, commodification, sense of place, and (media) representation. International case studies and analyses will be applied by incorporating Australian local cases studies where appropriate.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  1. provide opportunities to understand the concept of destination image, sense of place, authenticity and commodification, and their roles in tourism planning, management and marketing
  2. develop an understanding of the complex relationships between image, sense of place, culture and tourism
  3. analyse and apply theoretical frameworks of destination image, representation and place attachment to international and local case studies of tourism sites and destinations
  4. enhance abilities in critical thinking and problem solving, both as individuals and in groups
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • identify and discuss components of destination image, sense of place, authenticity and commodification
  • analyse the elements of destination image and sense of place, and to assess their relationship with tourist behaviours
  • articulate the complexity of authenticity and commodification processes in a broader tourism context
  • recognise and critique appropriate strategies for destination management and marketing
  • apply conceptual and theoretical concepts and frameworks to real international/local examples
  • demonstrate oral and written skills suitable for progression in the tourism industry
