Topic description
This topic develops students' awareness of the value and rising significance of sustainable tourism development. A number of environmental themes often identified and discussed in tourism research will be examined, including the implications of mass tourism, climate change, and urban transformation. The topic will also assess the social value of sustainable tourism development, including the needs of Indigenous peoples, and those in disadvantaged communities.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
- examine the role of sustainability in contemporary tourism developments
- engage with the key debates and themes in contemporary tourism developments
- identify the critical importance of introducing the notion of sustainability in future tourism developments (particularly those in a developing world context)
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to demonstrate the ability to
- analyse the historical (and contemporary) impacts of tourism developments
- examine and understand the role of sustainability in future tourism developments
- analyse individual case studies relating to sustainable tourism developments
