Topic description
This topic outlines the core values of festival and event design and the concepts of event management. It investigates the role of the event designer and the event manager, and the roles of event personnel in both an artistic and operational context. This topic also investigates the marketing, sponsorship, income generation and protocols for festivals and events.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce the basic concepts of festival and event design and management

  • provide a broad understanding of festival and event design and management principles and strategies

  • develop practical skills in festival and event operations with reference to a diverse range of events

  • outline the principles of event marketing and identify target markets and develop marketing strategies to promote festivals and events
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • identify the core values for a festival or event and the basic principles and techniques of event design and event management

  • identify target markets based on the festival or event's core values and then develop effective marketing strategies for the promotion of the festival or event

  • identify and analyse the differences between an event management and an event design approach and how these are applied to the creation and staging of a festival or event

  • develop effective operational plans and systems for the implementation phase of the staging of a festival or event
