Topic description
The aim of this topic is to provide basic training in research practice and essential knowledge on philosophies, methods and activities that are involved in preparing for a research project. It will cover the multi-disciplinary context of tourism research in terms of research process, research design, data sources, data analysis and communicating research results. Students will develop an academic research proposal in this topic with a chosen case study in an identified tourism sector.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce the concepts and principles of research process including literature review, research paradigms, methodologies, methods and data forms

  • develop ability to collect and critically evaluate information

  • develop and strengthen ability to undertake independent research

  • design and execute research study for the project or dissertation in a systematic and scientific manner
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be:

  • able to assess their own strengths and weaknesses in relation to research skills, and take steps to address the latter

  • able to improve critical academic reading and writing skills within a research context

  • able to develop an academic research proposal to achieve a desired outcome for an identified tourism sector

  • familiar with skills and techniques required during the research process and in turn well equipped when undertaking their masters project or dissertation
