Topic description
The topic will focus on an introduction of interpretation as a means of telling the story about a place, site, object or location. It is based on the concept of having a message or particular authentic story or stories to tell that will enhance the visitor experience and raise awareness about the value of the place so that it is conserved for present and future generations. It fosters sustainable visitation and protects the environment (both natural and cultural).

The topic will be an introduction to theme development, delivery methods (e.g., guides, signs, brochures, trails), and audience identification. The principles of effective communication will be covered, along with an understanding of why interpretation is good for business.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce the basic principles of interpretation

  • provide an understanding of the need to be effective story-tellers or interpreters

  • provide the knowledge and resources to develop effective interpretation skills

  • assist in preparing for presentation in a public forum

  • further develop critical analysis, research and report writing skills in the course of producing assignments

  • develop skills to assess the value and use of basic interpretation in a range of natural and cultural environments
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • define interpretation

  • identify why interpretation is an effective means of communication (create awareness, personalise the experience, allows you to be organised)

  • demonstrate an understanding of the concept of who the interpretation is for (market, organisation)

  • develop a simple theme from a topic and deliver it as a structured thematic application with an identifiable take home message

  • assess the effectiveness and success of the interpretation
