Topic description
The topic will introduce concepts and principles of business and strategic planning and their application in tourism, heritage, cultural and education sectors. It will provide opportunities for students to apply these principles to a range of projects and businesses connected with the tourism, heritage, education, cultural and related sectors. The topic will be an introduction to each stage of business planning including goal setting, situation analysis, organisational response and evaluation, leading to the development of an overall business plan suitable for a business or project in the relevant sectors.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce the concepts and principles of strategic and business planning for the tourism, heritage and cultural sectors

  • develop student understanding of the role and application of the essential concepts and stages of strategic and business planning

  • assist students to further develop their analytical and conceptual skills in the creation of effective business and project plans

  • provide students with the knowledge and resources to develop effective business plan documents
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate familiarity with the concepts and principles of strategic and business planning

  • identify appropriate objectives and strategies for business and projects in a sector relevant to their area of study

  • demonstrate that the can apply their knowledge of business planning concepts and principles to real world examples

  • develop a business plan to achieve a desired outcome
