Topic description
This topic develops students’ awareness of the ethical implications of research. A number of areas often identified and discussed in tourism research will be examined, and relevant ethical issues highlighted, including environmental issues, consumers, children, Indigenous peoples, and those in disadvantaged situations.

As part of this topic students will develop their own ethics application, as part of a research project or dissertation.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • allow students to understand the role of ethical practices

  • examine the role of ethics in a number of tourism industry scenarios

  • engage with the process of understanding the ethical implications of their own research, and apply for the appropriate clearance, as relevant to their area
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • analyse critically the ethical component in a range of contemporary tourism contexts

  • examine the role of ethics within tourism research

  • analyse individual research interests, to identify areas of ethical complexity, and develop methodological and ethical approaches to tourism research
