Topic description
This topic discusses the use of a viewfinder for establishing composition and preliminary monochromatic blocking-in relying on tone. The substitution of warm and cool for light and dark in deference to the picture plane is explored. Throughout the topic, emphasis is on the development of brushstrokes and the application of paint. It also includes a component of drawing.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • develop visual and intellectual awareness in students through a 'painterly' technique

  • encourage students to express pictorial imagery with integrity, sensibility and imagination
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate their skills and awareness through the use of paint

  • articulate their evaluation of artworks in an informed and critical manner
