Topic description
This interdisciplinary topic explores various theories that explain the place of discourses of sexuality in historical and contemporary settings. It applies these theories to a variety of contemporary debates and seeks to identify innovative and creative approaches to the representation and theorisation of sexuality. It addresses both Australian and international contexts.
Educational aims
The topic aims to introduce students to a range of contemporary theories and (inter)disciplinary approaches to the study of sexuality. It then asks students to engage with contemporary theory to analyse instances of contemporary sexuality politics.
Expected learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this topic, students should be able to:
- Identify and elaborate a range of current theories about sexuality;
- Apply theories about sexuality to the analysis of contemporary issues and debates;
- Describe some current public debates about sexuality and analyse the various positions in these debates;
- Engage in discussion about the politics of sexuality
