Topic description
The topic considers a wide range of contemporary debates emanating from feminist political theory and its challenge to traditional thought in the political sciences. By its very nature, therefore, and bearing in mind that many challenges have not arisen exclusively from within political science the topic will adopt a multi-disciplinary approach. This is designed as an interactive topic in which students and staff can discuss and debate a wide range of issues, which we will cover in the course of the semester.
Educational aims
This topic introduces students to the multifarious nature of feminist political theory and its interaction with traditional and contemporary debates in the area of political science.

The topic offers a theoretical base from which students interestedin specialising in the broad area of gender and politics at postgraduate level can develop a clear theoretical approach to their studies.
Expected learning outcomes
Students successfully completing this topic should be able to:
  • critically evaluate the main tenets of feminist political theory in the light of both historical and contemporary social constructions of gender relations;
  • develop a critical theoretical approach to honours study;
  • apply theoretical knowledge to contemporary gender issues and present findings verbally and in written form, in accordance with good scholarly practice
