Topic description
This topic invites students to explore theoretical debates surrounding the concept of 'feminist knowledge' and its relationship to other disciplines and/or intellectual traditions. In particular the topic invites students to (re)visit several key areas of feminist theory. In addition, it aims to develop students' research skills and prepare them for the process of writing a Master's thesis. Students will become familiar with some major contributions to the theory and practice of Women's Studies, and will learn the basic research skills necessary for thesis preparation.
Educational aims
The aim of the topic is to prepare students to undertake research in a selected area of Women's Studies by:
  • examining aspects of feminism as a field of intellectual inquiry
  • exploring how theoretical approaches and methods used by various researchers relate to students' proposed research questions
  • developing students' skills and confidence in feminist scholarship
Expected learning outcomes
After successfully completing this topic students should be able to:
  • demonstrate their ability to think critically and form independent judgements
  • summarise debates and approaches in some key areas of feminist theory and/or Women's Studies scholarship
  • compare different approaches to key issues of concern to Women's Studies
  • design a Masters thesis plan, includinga proposed research program and accompanying bibliography
