Topic description
This topic examines how organisational culture and structures constrain and support the use of evidence and research in public health policy and practice. Students will undertake a case study of an organisation with a stated commitment to providing effective public health practice. The case study will examine the organisation's formal aims, structures and practices, and use a theory or framework to add to our knowledge of how best to use evidence and research to contribute to healthy public policy.
Educational aims
The topic aims to:

  • Enhance understanding of the way public health organisations can support effective public health practices

  • Develop skills in analysis of public health organisational structures, management, culture and practices

  • Develop communication and advocacy skills to support and improve public health practice

  • Enhance ability and skills to undertake effective public health leadership .
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the topic students should be able to demonstrate:

  1. Understanding of the way public health organisations use evidence and research findings to support effective public health practices and policy.

  2. Ability to plan, consider ethical requirements, conduct and report on case study.

  3. Skills in analysis of public health organisational structures, management, culture and practices.

  4. Skills in synthesizing case study findings with a theory or framework in order to contribute to a debate about how to lead advocacy for healthy public policy.

  5. Communication and advocacy skills to advocate for improved public health practice.

  6. Competence to communicate in writing using an accepted journal format.

  7. Skills of organising and conducting formal meetings with a research supervisor.

  8. Capacity to develop research questions and methods that include consideration of research transfer and dissemination in a DrPH Dissertation.
