Topic description
The primary focus of this topic is to introduce the student to a range of chronic illnesses, and to understand the application of the biopsychosocial model for each illness. Cognitive behavioural models of some chronic illnesses will be presented, along with implications for treatment. Treatment approaches that seek to maximise a person's management of their chronic illness will be detailed. Overall, the aim of the topic is to teach students a framework within which they can approach psychological issues that influence outcome in chronic illnesses.

  • To introduce postgraduate students to a wide variety of evidence-based approaches that can be used with health issues
  • To develop skills in addressing complex issues related to the management of health from a psychological perspective
