Topic description
This topic will give students an introduction to basic anatomical and physiological principles.

Students will be introduced to the human body plan and its structure. The physiology and homeostasis of several organ systems will be emphasised.
Educational aims
This topic has one single aim; to provide a sound introduction to basic anatomical and physiological principles. Students will be introduced to the human body plan and its structure. The physiology and pathophysiology of several organ systems will be emphasised, by establishing their relevance to human communication.
Expected learning outcomes
Upon completion of this topic, students will demonstrate an understanding of:

  • basic concepts in human anatomy and physiology

  • the chemistry/ physics, cell biology and biochemistry relevant to an understanding of basic anatomy and physiology

  • the hierarchical organisation of atoms, molecules, cells, tissues, and organs, and how these constitute the structure of the human body

  • the principle of homeostasis as applied to several organ systems within the human body, and key physiological principles underlying the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine and neural systems

  • bones and muscles as organ systems, and key principles of biomechanics

  • introductory pathophysiological principles, and an introduction to case studies.

  • an appreciation of some of the anatomy and physiology that underpin human communication
