Topic description
This topic provides students with skills to transform theoretical knowledge into practice to assist adults with a range of complex communication and swallowing disorders. Skills include evidence-based speech pathology practice as it specifically applies to this population including counselling, diagnosis and intervention planning and conducting ethical clinical research.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is:

  1. To understand and be able to apply the Ethical principles that guide speech pathology professional practice.

  2. To understand the role of the speech pathologist in working with individuals with communication and swallowing needs at different times in their journey, including the role of the speech pathologist in working with individuals in the terminal phase of their life.

  3. To introduce students to those psychosocial or mental health issues that may contribute to or arise in association with a range of communication and/or swallowing problems.

  4. To encourage students to reflect on their own emotional responses to clients and their families who are experiencing complex issues and identify how best to seek support and guidance from clinical supervisors and academic staff
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  1. Describe, measure, analyse and report findings from assessment of complex communication and swallowing disorders in adults.

  2. Determine a client/carer’s preferred treatment goals and then select appropriate approaches and treatment tasks to meet those goals.

  3. Use decision making paradigms and knowledge of ethical principles to determine appropriate intervention in the context of a severe communication or swallowing disorder.

  4. Identify and describe psychosocial and mental health issues that may contribute to or arise in association with a range of communication and/or swallowing problems.

  5. Describe the impact that psychosocial or mental health issues may have on a client or family and how this may influence their level of engagement with assessment or therapy.

  6. Discuss an interprofessional approach to identification, diagnosis and treatment of people with psychological problems or mental health disorders.

  7. Reflect on own emotional responses to clients with psychological, behavioural or mental health issues and identify how best to seek support and guidance from clinical supervisors and academic staff.
