Topic description
This topic provides students with the theoretical knowledge to understand a range of complex communication and feeding disorders in children. In particular, evidence-based speech pathology research and practice are reviewed regarding appropriate evaluation and intervention approaches. A particular emphasis is placed on understanding the theory, principles and practice of applying Augmentative and Alternative Communication solutions for individuals with complex communication needs.
Educational aims
The topic aims to:

  • Provide students with the theoretical knowledge to understand a range of complex communication and feeding disorders in children.

  • Review evidence-based speech pathology research and practice regarding appropriate evaluation and intervention approaches.

  • Facilitate students' understanding of the theory, principles and practice of applying Augmentative and Alternative Communication solutions for individuals with complex communication needs.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  1. Describe factors that influence development of oral and pharyngeal control for swallowing (e.g. motor development, sensory experiences, cognition, communication, psychosocial development, nutrition, medical)

  2. Provide an overview of the nature, causes, maintaining factors, opportunities and barriers in clients with complex communication and feeding needs

  3. Identify related impacts upon safety, nutrition and hydration and a child’s learning and behaviour that may arise from a feeding or communication problem

  4. Describe the process involved in evaluation of feeding / communication difficulties (e.g. case history taking; clinical assessment; instrumental assessment; Quality of Life)

  5. Take a systems approach to describe, interpret, analyse and report findings from assessment, integrating scores with client's performance/behaviour

  6. Compare and contrast suitable Augmentative and Alternative Communication designs and features for a specific client (e.g. communication boards, symbols; signing; technology)

  7. Determine and prioritize treatment goals

  8. Select appropriate intervention strategies to meet prioritized goals

  9. Identify resources and strategies that would be relevant to support a child's learning and behavioural development.
