In this topic which precedes the clinical block placements of 4 days per week for the final semester of the program, challenging diagnostic, assessment and intervention dilemmas are presented in these more advanced PBL cases, with attention to the management of psychosocial and ethical issues as these affect patients with severe communication and swallowing disorders arising from both acute and/or acquired neurological conditions.

This topic is one of three strands in the course – Professional Studies and Communication Sciences, Speech Pathology Skills and Practice and Research. It covers the key areas required for entry level to professional practice according to Competency Based Occupational Standards (CBOS) for Speech Pathologists. Using problem based learning, complex issues and case studies that cover multiple range indicators (for example, cases that have speech, voice and swallowing issues together) are undertaken. The interrelated themes of lifespan development and social context continue. The four core academic abilities will be developed to advanced levels: Reasoning; Professional Communication; Lifelong Learning; and Professional Role.

This topic aims to develop students' understanding of the following areas to a professional level:

• Complex issues and case studies that cover multiple range indicators in the key areas of professional practice (speech, voice, language, fluency, swallowing and, in addition, hearing

• The broader issues of lifespan development and the impact of the social context on health

• Psychosocial issues and ethical dilemmas

• The core academic abilities of reasoning and professional communication.

On completion of this topic, students will be expected to:

• Demonstrate complex understandings of the anatomy and physiology, phonetics and linguistics related to the six key professional areas

• Demonstrate the capacity to make decisions that take into account the complexity of speech pathology problems

• Recommend strategies for action

• Evaluate the effectiveness of intervention plans

• Demonstrate an appreciation of complex decision-making process in complex clinical cases where psychosocial and ethical issues may impact on intervention.
