Topic description
In this topic students develop the knowledge and skills required for evidence-based practice in speech pathology. Students will partner with clinicians to formulate an answerable clinical question. Once the question is determined, they will search for the current best evidence, critically appraise the evidence, synthesise it and make recommendations about practice based on the integration of client/family values, clinical expertise and research evidence. This will be presented within an evidence-based practice framework.
Educational aims
This topic aims to facilitate students' ability to:

  • Formulate answerable clinical questions

  • Locate and evaluate evidence to support and enhance their clinical practice

  • Evaluate the quality of research and other relevant evidence

  • Integrate research evidence with client/family values and clinical expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders to formulate relevant recommendations to guide clinical practice

  • Enable students to develop skills in oral and written presentation of research findings.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  • Assess the suitability of a range of research findings to answer a specific clinical question

  • Analyse and evaluate the quality of research in terms of methodological rigour

  • Apply the principles of evidence-based practice in their everyday practice

  • Present research findings in oral and written form.
