Topic description
This topic gives an introduction to Biblical Hebrew. Students are introduced to the Hebrew Biblical text and basic Hebrew vocabulary and grammar. They will learn to read and translate some passages of the Biblical text, using basic lexicographical aids.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • gain basic skills in, and knowledge of, Biblical Hebrew
  • learn to read Biblical Hebrew
  • translate Biblical Hebrew, using basic lexicographical aids
  • acquire an appreciation of the sounds and thought processes of Biblical Hebrew

Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the topic students will:

  • have acquired basic knowledge of the Hebrew alphabet and its pronunciation
  • have acquired a basic Hebrew vocabulary
  • be able to recognise the fundamentals of Hebrew grammar
  • have acquired skills in reading from the Hebrew Bible
  • be able to translate a selection of passages from the Hebrew Bible
