Topic description
This topic explores the meaning and implications of ministry that is exercised as both a vocation and profession within the local church or congregation. It focuses on the ethical dimensions of the minister's life, together with the ethical standards expected of properly professional behaviour carried out as service to the Gospel and the neighbour.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • develop an understanding of the professional aspects of being and acting as a minister
  • appreciate the possibilities open to theological ethical reflection in all aspects of ministry
  • develop skills of ethical reflection and analysis that clarify the contextual, personal, and behavioural components of ministry
  • contribute to an awareness of the professional scope of ministry as service to God and neighbour

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students should be able to:

  • identify the theological and ethical elements integral to the context, person, and behaviour of ministry as a profession
  • apply a method of theological and ethical reasoning to the central elements of professional ministry
  • incorporate the tradition and resources of Christian theology to the analysis of ethical issues pertaining to the context, life, and behaviour of pastoral ministry
  • contribute to group learning in effective and collaborative ways
