Topic description
The topic provides an introduction to archaeological theories and methods employed in human behavioural research in modern societies. The primary goal of the topic is to familiarise students with the basic skills required to conduct archaeological research in contemporary settings. Students will develop research designs, conduct field research in the Adelaide vicinity, and produce oral and written reports summarising their findings.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce archaeological theories and methods employed in studies of human behaviour in modern societies

  • address the relationships between material objects and human behaviour in a variety of social contexts

  • develop field research skills in relation to modern material cultural analysis

  • develop critical thinking skills as well as oral and written presentation skills
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate a general understanding of the role of modern material culture studies in archaeology

  • develop research designs and conduct field research relating to analyses of modern materials

  • critically evaluate data from modern contexts in relation to explanations of human behavioural variability

  • communicate an argument clearly and coherently in the form of oral presentations, written research reports, and written research papers
