Topic description
The topic aims to teach those aspects of leadership relevant to business and society. Subjects covered will include: the nature and importance of leadership; the differences between leadership and management; types of leadership and their impacts on business, society and followers; how leaders lead and leadership in practice, leadership development, experiential leadership.
Educational aims
The topic aims to achieve:
- understanding of the nature and importance of leadership in business and society
- understanding of the differences between leadership and management
- an appreciation of the types of leadership and how they impact on business, society and those led
- an understanding of how leaders lead and how leadership is practised.
Expected learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this topic students will be able to:
- Describe the nature and importance of leadership in business and society
- Recognise and describe different types of leadership and how they impact on business, society and those led
- Explain how leaders lead and how leadership is practised
- Recognise leadership in practice in business and society
- Differentiate between management and leadership and how and when to apply these differences
- Develop and discuss their own leadership skills
- Explain how to bring about appropriate change through the application of well-chosen leadership strategies
- Work within a group using both leadership and followership skills where appropriate.
