Topic description
The topic aims to teach those aspects of leadership relevant to business and society. Subjects covered will include: the nature and importance of leadership; the differences between leadership and management; types of leadership and their impacts on business, society and followers; how leaders lead and leadership in practice, leadership development, experiential leadership.
Educational aims
The topic aims to achieve:
  • understanding of the nature and importance of leadership in business and society
  • understanding of the differences between leadership and management
  • an appreciation of the types of leadership and how they impact on business, society and those led
  • an understanding of how leaders lead and how leadership is practised.
Expected learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this topic students will be able to:
  1. Describe the nature and importance of leadership in business and society
  2. Recognise and describe different types of leadership and how they impact on business, society and those led
  3. Explain how leaders lead and how leadership is practised
  4. Recognise leadership in practice in business and society
  5. Differentiate between management and leadership and how and when to apply these differences
  6. Develop and discuss their own leadership skills
  7. Explain how to bring about appropriate change through the application of well-chosen leadership strategies
  8. Work within a group using both leadership and followership skills where appropriate.
