Topic description
Economic policy issues will be analysed and discussed, these may include, for example, the ACCC and competition policy, public finance, and the Trade Practices Act. Advantages and disadvantages of policies will be argued in the light of economic analysis. Criteria for evaluation will include those of the government, industry and individuals in general. Policies dealing with taxation, industry performance, international trade, environmental problems, labour economics and health will be among those covered.
Educational aims
The aim of the topic is to enable students to understand the consequences of economic policies for the various stakeholders in the economy now and in the future.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students should be able to:
  • Describe and evaluate various economic policies with regard to their consequences for the relevant stakeholders
  • Analyse the mechanisms by which economic policies influence various sectors of the economy and our trading partners.
