Topic description
This topic is suitable for students with little or no prior knowledge of Mandarin Chinese.

It is the second topic on written and spoken Mandarin Chinese for Beginner students. It helps students consolidate the basic knowledge of Chinese pronunciation and grammar learned in CHIN1201 and expand their range of elementary conversational Chinese and written Chinese characters.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • expand beginner students' ability to pronounce the Pinyin Romanisation system for standard Mandarin Chinese

  • expand beginner students' ability to write using the Pinyin Romanisation system for standard Mandarin Chinese

  • further develop beginner students' knowledge of the sounds, structures and vocabulary of standard Mandarin Chinese

  • further develop beginner students' speaking skills on simple everyday topics

  • further develop beginner students' character writing skills and techniques
Expected learning outcomes
As a result of this topic, students will be able to:

  • achieve accurate pronunciation of anything written in the Pinyin Romanisation system

  • accurately transcribe syllables and tones in the Pinyin Romanisation system

  • produce and understand most types of simple sentence patterns in standard Mandarin Chinese

  • participate in simple Chinese conversations about oneself and one's family, using socially appropriate formalities in standard Mandarin Chinese

  • read and write about 400 Chinese characters using the correct strokes in the correct order
