Course context
All students are strongly encouraged to attend the tutorial in order to improve their oral proficiency.
Topic description
This is the first topic on written and spoken Mandarin Chinese for Intermediate students. It will focus on Chinese conversations describing people's activities and aspirations, with culturally appropriate choices of vocabulary and basic grammatical forms.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • expand students' ability to produce and understand a range of sentence patterns in Chinese from simple to more complex levels of difficulty

  • develop students' capacity for oral interaction taking cultural norms into consideration

  • build up spoken and written vocabulary to at least 900 words
Expected learning outcomes
As a result of this topic, students will be able to:

  • speak, read and write simple sentences and more common types of compound and complex sentence patterns in standard Mandarin Chinese

  • engage in Chinese conversations describing people's activities and aspirations, with culturally appropriate choices of vocabulary and basic grammatical forms

  • draw from a spoken and written vocabulary of at least 900 standard Mandarin words in conversation and in spoken and written exercises
