Course context
All students are strongly encouraged to attend the tutorial in order to improve their oral proficiency.
Topic description
This is the second topic on written and spoken Mandarin Chinese for Intermediate students. It will involve using spoken Chinese to accomplish various purposes in normal daily life, as well as reading short passages in written Chinese.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • further expand students' ability to produce and understand a range of sentence patterns in standard Mandarin Chinese from simple to more complex levels of difficulty, some featuring conditional constructions and types of complements

  • develop students' capacity for oral interaction taking cultural norms into consideration

  • develop students reading capacity

  • build up spoken and written vocabulary to at least 1200 standard Mandarin Chinese words
Expected learning outcomes
As a result of this topic, students will be able to:

  • speak, read and write grammatically simple sentences and more common types of compound and complex sentence patterns, including conditional constructions and some types of complements, in standard Mandarin Chinese

  • use spoken standard Mandarin Chinese to accomplish common tasks in normal daily life in culturally appropriate ways

  • read and respond appropriately to short passages written in Chinese characters, such as extracts from short stories

  • utilise a spoken and written vocabulary of at least 1200 standard Mandarin Chinese words in conversation and in spoken and written exercises
