Topic description
This topic will examine the typical development of speech, language and communication in babies and pre-schoolers. It will also examine language and communication development during primary school years, in adolescents and adults and discuss the impact of impairments and disabilities on language and communication development. It will briefly address the strategies and interventions to develop language and communication in children.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to develop an understanding of the typical development of speech, communication and language in babies, children, adolescents and adults, and how a disability can affect that process
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:
- provide succinct descriptions of speech, communication and language, and the components of language (form, content and use)
- describe briefly, models of communication and language development
- provide a clear description of typical language acquisition in areas of phonological, pragmatic, morphological, semantic and syntactic developments in babies and pre-schoolers
- define the stages in the development of receptive and expressive language and communication in babies and pre-schoolers
- describe briefly, language, communication and literacy development in primary school years, adolescent and adult years
- relate the knowledge of typical language and communication development to people with disabilities
- describe principles of language and communication intervention
