Topic description
This topic introduces the four core areas within civil engineering (Geomechanics, Structures, Transport and Water) and shows how each of the core

areas forms part of integrated infrastructure systems and that entire systems needed to be considered in the design of a solution.

All four areas are discussed as well as engineering design principles, project costing, discounted cash flow and nett present value; application of PERT and probability theory in project scheduling; tendering and other decision making strategies.
Educational aims
To give students an understanding of the various specialisations in civil engineering, an understanding of the engineering of transport and traffic systems, and a range of project management skills.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the range of civil engineering specialisations
  2. Understand transport and traffic systems
  3. Analyse, design, plan and manage transport and traffic systems
  4. Execute a range of project management skills
