Topic description
This topic introduces the theory and practice of traffic engineering including road, rail and maritime infrastructure. Topics to be covered include traffic flow theory, theories of interrupted & area-wide traffic flow; traffic surveys & data collection/analysis methods; performance/design of intersections & roundabouts; traffic signal operation/design; transport & the environment; planning & design for public transport systems; road safety, urban transport planning, outback transport solutions issues, travel-demand forecasting and basic road design variables, Intelligent Transport Systems.
Educational aims
All civil engineers must understand the issues and solutions pertaining to the efficient development of transport infrastructure of all forms. The aim of this topic is to present an introduction to transport systems and to urban, outback and maritime transport planning.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand and propose solutions for the choice of various forms of transport problem
  2. Understand the relationship between freight transport and land-use
  3. Understand the basic concepts of transportation modelling and design
  4. Design feasible transport schemes using a variety of modes of transport
  5. Evaluate transportation projects in terms of their capacity, cost, environmental impact and equity
  6. Interpret road plans, long-sections and cross-sections
