Topic description
This topic provides students with an introduction to the use of personal computers in geographical research, as well as their application in many of the areas in which geographers are employed. The topic emphasises the development of academically and vocationally relevant skills. Students are provided with a basic introduction to the Windows operating system and the software packages EXCEL, SPSS and ArcMap. This topic is the recommended foundation for students going on to study GEOG2700 Geographical Information Systems.
Educational aims
This topic aims to equip students with the personal computer (PC) skills needed by Environmental Management, Environmental Studies or Geography graduates and to make them familiar with the software packages they are most likely to need in employment or further study. It is an introductory topic, assuming no previous computer experience or programming knowledge.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Analyse and chart a range of geographical data using the Excel spreadsheet package
  2. Manipulate and display spatial data using the ArcMap GIS package
  3. Display an understanding of basic probability theory and statistical inference
  4. Carry out tests for statistical significance
  5. Analyse questionnaire data using the SPSS package
  6. Write reports combining results from several software packages
  7. Manage computer files and folders using the Windows operating system
