Topic description
This topic offers students high-level instruction in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) building upon the knowledge acquired in GEOG2700/GEOG3013 Geographical Information Systems, or GEOG1003 Introduction to GIS. The topic will extend the students' knowledge of spatial information theory and expose them to new tools and methodologies. The topic will develop an understanding of data capture, metadata, editing, information management and communication of spatial information.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of advanced GIS methodologies for the capture, editing and management spatial information.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the collection of vector spatial information using digitising methods and a range of field data capture techniques
  2. Demonstrate the creation, editing and building of topologically correct spatial information in a spatial information management system
  3. Design and build server base mapping services for on-line communication of spatial information
  4. Design and populated a spatial information management system for the distribution of spatial information to other users
