Topic description
The topic brings together an applied health psychology model for explaining human behaviour in health and illness and theories of human development. Hospitalisation, acute and chronic illness, grief and loss and stress, and coping experiences are then examined in terms of their likely impact on development and the influences of stages of development on an individual's response to health related crises.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to apply psychological theory and research to health and illness and lifespan development and to interactions between health and illness and developmental stage.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will demonstrate that they are able to:

  • identify psychological influences on how people stay healthy, why they become ill and how they respond when ill
  • apply psychological theories to social, emotional, cognitive and moral development
  • explain the impact on development of health crises
  • explain how responses to health and illness are influenced by a person's developmental stage
  • identify and evaluate interventions to help people across the lifespan to stay well or respond to illness
  • use databases to find evidence based psychological resources.
