Topic description
This topic provides students with an overview of health systems and major health policies in a number of countries, with a particular focus on current health reform agendas. The potential relevance of international health reforms to the Chinese health system are explored. Countries included in the discussion are Australia, USA, UK, Singapore, New Zealand and Canada. In addition the topic considers the validity of making international comparisons, health reforms in developing countries and the impact of globalization on health.
Educational aims
To develop students' understanding of health sytems and health policies in different countries and to enable students to make an assessment of the relevance of international health reforms to the Chinese health system.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the structure and major policy drivers of health systems in several countries. They will understand the basis for, and limitations of, making international comparisons and will be able to assess the relevance of international health reforms to the Chinese health systems.
