Topic description
This topic builds on the introduction to management theory and models given in the Nankai topic Management Science. It traces the evolution of research and theory about motivation at work, the nature of management, and the practices of recruiting staff and managing their performance. It introduces western methods of motivating staff, managing performance and dealing with conflict, as well the principles and methods of project management and theories of change and the concept of organisational culture.
Educational aims
This topic aims to set the foundations for students' specialised study in hospital and health service management, bringing knowledge and skills from western approaches along with a critical review of their relevance to the Chinese health system. The topic focuses on people management and the challenge of managing change.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be able to:

  • Assess the potential usefulness of western methods of people management in Chinese hospitals and health services, especially selection and performance management

  • Apply improved insight to their own leadership and management styles

  • Plan for change using the framework of project management.
