The topic shows how psychological theory and research can be used to understand and redress a variety of real-world issues or problems. This topic has a specific focus on the problem of first year student engagement and retention. Other issues span diverse topics and settings (possible areas are the workplace, health, accident prevention, forensic applications, eating disorders, immigration and marketing). For some issues, the importance of culture or other contextual considerations is shown. In covering diverse issues and settings, the topic also provides information about potential occupations.

This topic aims to:

• Show how psychological theory and research can be used to understand and redress a variety of issues or problems in the real world

• Show how cultural and other contextual factors influence the understanding of problems and the development of solutions

On successful completion of this topic students should be able to:

• Demonstrate knowledge of the application of psychological theory and research to a range of types of problems

• Analyse a novel problem and propose an appropriate solution

• Take into account cultural and other relevant contextual factors when analysing problems and developing solutions

• Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of occupations that utilise psychological knowledge and research
