Topic description
In this topic students will apply knowledge gained in NURS8760 Acute Mental Health Nursing Theory and critique practice within an acute mental health setting.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to engage students with:

  • mental health systems of care, the practice of assessment of consumer and carer needs and recovery-based philosophies within an acute mental health setting

  • practice in a range of therapeutic interventions and modalities of care

  • legal issues related to care and consumer rights in an acute mental health setting
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  1. appraise current biomedical philosophies in relation to contemporary recovery-oriented practice

  2. demonstrate consumer and carer focused practice in an acute mental health setting

  3. demonstrate skills in the assessment of the mental health issues of individuals, differentiating between diagnostic classifications

  4. use assessment tools common to mental health settings

  5. demonstrate therapeutic interventions for individuals with acute and/or complex mental health problems

  6. critically reflect on the legal and ethical requirements of the acute mental health setting

  7. demonstrate mental health nursing practice according to the Standards of Practice for Australian Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN 2010).
