All commencing Indigenous students are strongly encouraged to participate in this Orientation Program. It is highly recommended that students who are offered places into university under the Indigenous Admissions Scheme participate in this program.
The Orientation Program gives commencing students the opportunity to spend time actively participating in lectures, tutorials and workshops. These activities are introductions to what university life is like and emphasis is given to creating social and academic networks by linking students to other Indigenous students on campus and other support services at University.
Topic information
AUST 1301 is a two-week intensive topic which will introduce students to the diversity of issues affecting Indigenous Australians in higher education. In particular, students will identify, discuss and critically analyse historical and contemporary issues in Indigenous Australian studies. Students will be encouraged to relate the topic material to the importance of reaffirming Indigenaity and further develop their political consciousness through critical readings, literacy and language skills. Furthermore, this topic will enable students to improve their academic writing skills in preparation for university studies.
