Both Indigenous Studies and Indigenous Education are areas of specialisation with general relevance to those whose interest and future career path involve understanding Indigenous Australian cultures, histories and knowledges. Both areas are increasingly attractive to students who wish to be involved in Indigenous schooling, education and Indigenous affairs.
Enrol in a topic or in the Indigenous Studies minor sequence in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) that is relevant, interesting and challenging. These topics allow you to study Indigenous Australia, its cultures, peoples and land through an interdisciplinary approach.
The topics that form Indigenous Studies and Indigenous Education programs at Flinders are taught by Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff from the Yunggoendi First Nations Centre. Yunggorendi has a collaborative partnership with other Flinders faculties, departments and schools.
This topic will integrate academic study of Aboriginal histories, cultures and contemporary issues, with a range of practical experiences, including opportunities to hear Aboriginal viewpoints. Areas covered include: tourism; the Dreaming; history; traditional and contemporary social organisation; communities and lifestyles; Aboriginal arts; health; employment; education; land rights and Native Title.
This topic is designed to allow students to read, view and experience a range of texts which deal with encounters between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. It offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of representation of Australian Indigenous knowledges and cultural practices using an 'education for reconciliation' approach. It analyses contested definitions of culture and paradigms of cultural value, meaning and priority. It will introduce students to theories of representation and to their application to Indigenous materials, knowledges, social and cultural practices in: literature, drama, film, music, autobiography, visual art, artefacts and material culture, dance, storytelling, oral history, local legends, ceremony, sport etc. It will employ cross cultural approaches to subject matter and also investigate post-colonial notions of authenticity, reciprocity, hybridity, third space negotiation and collaboration. This topic will be taught in conjunction with Australian Studies Staff.
The aim of this topic is to focus on the major issues in contemporary Indigenous Australian education, to enable students to teach Indigenous Australian children in both urban and remote contexts. It will focus on how these issues relate in the overall context of the contemporary Indigenous Australian struggle for rights, justice and equity.
