This short course is especially suitable for people who are interested in teaching English as second/foreign language and practicing teachers who would like to increase their knowledge of linguistics. It will also appeal to anyone with an interest in how language works.
Teaching English as a second/foreign language is exciting and rewarding. But what is the English language and how does it work?
Linguistics is the study of language and can help us answer these questions. In this course Dr. Jeffrey Gil introduces you to the nature of language, the sounds, sound patterns, word structure and grammar of English, and discusses how you can use this knowledge in your teaching.

The major aims of this short course are to:
familiarise participants with the various components of the English language
create a basic understanding of how English works which participants can use in their teaching of English as a second/foreign language.
Successful completion of Fundamentals of Linguistics for English Language Teaching comprises of two online quizzes held in week 2 and week 4 of the course (60%; 30% each quiz), and a written reflection on learning report (40%) at the end of the course.
This short course is the equivalent to one credit point at Flinders University.
Participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Dr. Jeffrey Gil is a Senior Lecturer in ESOL/TESOL. He has extensive experience developing and teaching ESOL and TESOL topics at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. Jeffrey previously taught English language and linguistics topics at university level in China, and has also worked as a language tester using the International Second Language Proficiency Ratings (ISLPR) system.
