The Graduate Certificate in Global Health Care is an 18-unit program offered by the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences on a full fee-paying basis. It is normally completed over two semesters part-time but can be completed in one semester full-time. The course articulates with the 36 unit Graduate Diploma in Nursing (specialisations) and the 54 unit Master of Nursing and the 54 unit Master of Midwifery. Topics have been designed to enable progression through the three awards.

Students who complete the Graduate Certificate in Global Health Care normally receive credit up to 18 units should they choose to apply for entry into the Graduate Diploma in Nursing and/or the Master of Nursing or the Master of Midwifery.

The course can be taken in internal or external mode.

Admission requirements

Applicants must hold an approved bachelor-level degree or equivalent qualification (AQF level 7) in a health profession from an approved tertiary institution.

However, the Faculty Board may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

Course aims

The Graduate Certificate in Global Health Care provides the opportunity for health professionals anywhere in the world to develop and apply advanced knowledge, skills and attributes related to nursing and midwifery in a global context.

Learning outcomes 

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Analyse factors that influence policy development from a global perspective
  • Evaluate how policy and political contexts impact on the social determinants of health
  • Critically analyse international health policy and its impact on health systems and population health

Program of study

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Global Health Care a student must complete 18 units as specified below with a grade of Pass or NGP or better in each topic.
The award of a grade of Fail (F) in the same topic on more than one occasion or in 9 units or more, or failure to complete the course within four consecutive semesters may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University's Policy on Student Progress.

Except with permission of the Faculty Board:

  • no topic may be attempted more than twice;
  • the course must be completed within four consecutive semesters part-time

Where a pathway has an availability of option topics, these must be selected from topics within the Graduate Certificate in Global Health Care unless negotiated with the Course Coordinator.

On completion of this pathway students will be able to:

  • analyze the concept of clinical governance as it applies to a range of organisations in a global health context
  • systematically review care provision in a range of organisations against health care standards and accreditation processes
  • implement the processes required to ensure quality and safety within organisations in a global health context

  • articulate the influence of globalisation on health and health care for a diverse range of population groups
  • analyse how the social determinants of health inform health policy
  • analyse global policy and health programs through the principles of primary health care
  • critique the roles of health professionals in informing, implementing and evaluating global policy and health strategies
  • critique processes of partnership and sustainability in achieving improved health outcomes for a diverse range of population groups
