The Bachelor of Tourism Management is offered by the Faculty of Education, Humanities and Law as a dual award with the Advanced Diploma of Travel and Tourism (SIT60112) offered by TAFE SA. The dual award requires three years of full-time study, or the equivalent part-time, to complete both qualifications. Students are required to enrol concurrently at both the University and TAFE SA to complete the dual award.

Course aims

This course aims to:

  • develop managerial skills in the tourism and travel industry;
  • develop communication skills and the ability to present information in a variety of disciplines and collaborative situations;
  • develop research, analytical and problem solving skills;
  • develop a critical and theoretical understanding of current and emerging travel and tourism industry practices, trends, products and services;
  • develop knowledge and skills to create and implement sustainable and strategic business plans and develop new products;
  • develop a broad knowledge of the laws that relate to the travel or tourism industry;
  • introduce students to technologies used in the travel or tourism industry to support strategic management functions.

Learning outcomes 

Upon graduating, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate managerial skills in the tourism and travel industry, including the ability to: develop business plans; operate independently; and be responsible for making a range of strategic business decisions;
  • communicate in a professional manner through analytical reports and effective verbal presentations in a variety of disciplines and collaborative situations;
  • research and critically analyse current and emerging travel or tourism industry practices, trends, products and services;
  • initiate, generate and test the development of new or improved products and services;
  • apply both theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to specific case studies;
  • demonstrate broad knowledge of the laws that relate to the travel or tourism industry;
  • apply both theoretical and practical knowledge and skills of technologies used in the travel or tourism industry; and research and implement new and emerging technologies.

Program of study

To qualify for the Bachelor of Tourism Management a student must complete 108 units as follows:

  • 54 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic according to the program of study listed below; and
  • the Advanced Diploma of Travel and Tourism (SIT60112) at TAFE SA, for which 54 units of credit will be granted.

The award of a grade of Fail (F) on more than one occasion in the same topic may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University’s Policy on Student Progress.
