1. How do I connect my University iPhone/iPad to the Flinders wireless network?

It is highly recommended using wireless networks (wi-fi) wherever possible to avoid paying carrier data fees. To connect your iPhone/iPad to the Flinders (Eduroam) wireless network:

  • From your iPhone/iPad, select Settings
  • Select Wi-Fi (turn on)
  • Tap on the word 'eduroam' from the list of available networks
  • Enter your FAN@flinders.edu.au then select 'Next'
  • Enter your password then select 'Done'

Please note: Whilst on campus, when you turn on your iPhone/iPad, after a few seconds it willl automatically connect to Eduroam provided you are within the wireless network coverage area.

2. How do I set up my University iPhone/iPad with Flinders Exchange email?

  • From your iPhone/iPad, select Settings > Accounts & Passwords > Add Account
  • Select "Exchange"
  • In the "Email" field enter your full email address (e.g.firstname.lastname@flinders.edu.au)
  • In the "Description" field type: Flinders Email and select "Next"
  • A pop up window will appear. Select "Configure Manually"
  • In the "Password" field enter your University password and select "Next"
  • In the "Server" field enter: outlook.office365.com
  • In both the "Domain" and "Username" fileds enter your FAN@flinders.edu.au then select 'Next'
  • Select 'Save'

Please note: It also important that you select Settings > Calendar and scroll down to Default Calendar and ensure you set Flinders Email as the default. This ensures that when you add appointments to your mobile device that they will sync with your Outlook calendar.


3. How do I set up my University iPhone/iPad with Flinders VPN?

The Virtual Private Network client allows off campus network access to appear as though part of the Flinders on campus network.

4. How do I use my iPhone as a modem (tethering) or wi-fi hot spot?

The latest firmware version enables you to use your iPhone as a modem which is otherwise known as tethering. This is the same as using a wireless mobile broadband USB modem. This information refers only for use within Australia.

Personal Hotspot allows you to share your mobile internet connection with a computer or other Wi-Fi device. Any data used during tethering/hotspot will come off your data plan's included data allowance.

To enable tethering or turn on your Personal Hotspot:

  • Select Settings
  • Select Personal Hotspot (turn on)
  • Alternatively select Settings
  • Select Mobile
  • Select Personal Hotspot (turn on)
  • If you are tethering, connect the iPhone to your computer using USB or Bluetooth. Follow any prompts that appear on your computer to configure a new network connection and  select ‘iPhone' from the list of available services. Mac and Windows computers should automatically detect and enable the tethering connection
  • If you are using the Personal Hotspot to share your mobile internet connection through Wi-Fi, on the connecting device, choose iPhone from the list of available Wi-Fi networks. Enter the Wi-Fi password when prompted.

Please note: If you are not on a data plan or are having difficulty tethering please contact Client Services for details before attempting to tether.

5. How can I monitor my data usage on the iPhone/iPad?

  • Select Settings
  • Select General
  • Then select Usage
  • Scroll down to Cellular Network Data
  • The total amount of Sent and Received data used will display.

Please note: To accurately track your monthly data usage this should be reset each month in accordance with your bill cycle.

6. How do I upgrade to the latest firmware?

To check if you have the latest version of iOS:

  • Select Settings -> General -> Software Update .

7. How do I restart my iPhone/iPad?

As the iPhone is a handheld computer with a phone application, it is recommended to power cycle the device regularly. In general, mobile phones should be switched off and back on again at least once a month. If you rarely turn your iPhone off, they have an occasional tendency to 'freeze', especially if it has not been restarted for several weeks. Restart your iPhone/iPad
