Addressing the serious social challenges of the digital world.
At JBC Social Cyber Training, we're passionate about providing leaders and public sector officials with the information, resources and training they need for our digital future.
We are an interdisciplinary team of social cyber researchers and educators from the Jeff Bleich Centre for the US Alliance in Digital Technology, Security and Governance (JBC), a non-profit, non-partisan research and training centre at Flinders University.
We are excited about the incredible transformations that digital technologies can bring to our lives, but we are also concerned about their misuses – particularly how digital technologies can damage societal cohesion and democratic values and structures.
Our mission is to provide information, resources and training about the threats of the digital world and to help shape strategies to address them.
We have a strong focus on ensuring that the public sector is ready for the digital future. After all, public servants are at the coalface of governance in the digital age, and digital technologies have implications for many of the services that the public sector delivers.
Navigating the Digital Dilemma
Working in a government agency means facing unique and complex challenges. That’s why our flagship workshop, Navigating the Digital Dilemma: How governments can reap the benefits of digital technologies while protecting communities and democracy has been designed specifically for public sector employees.
We surveyed over 150 public sector employees from the Government of South Australia to discover the public sector’s readiness for the digital era. We used insights from the survey results to design a workshop that provides context for the important work that the public sector needs to do in a time of pervasive digital transformation.
The workshop helps public sector employees:

“The work and and research that the team at the JBC is producing is in relatively new fields such as social cybersecurity and is essentially important to industry, government, and broader society. As a new graduate, all of the opportunities I have had and the work that I have done with the JBC has also given me a strong base of real-world experience.”

“Education is one of the key sectors being targeted by cyber-attacks. Education is also the way we will overcome this challenge... It is our obligation to provide education and guidance that will give them strong resilience and self-awareness, so they can fulfil their destinies with confidence.”
Dr John H. Newton

“The Jeff Bleich Centre has introduced an important conversation for people working in public service about the impacts of rapidly technological change on the fabric of our societies. The research team looks not just at the hardware, malware, ransomware and physical security aspects of the cyber world, but also at the attention economy and vulnerabilities inherent in pervasive digital systems. Understanding the other half of the digital equation – the effects on our democracy and its structures – is just as important as protecting our communities from physical cyber threats.”
