Chronic Condition Management, Flinders Program TM, Diabetes education, Aboriginal health. The perceptions of Aboriginal health workers who have undergone the Diabetes Course, conducted by the Flinders University, Masters Thesis. Diabetes is acknowledged as a national health priority in Australia. The prevalence of diabetes in the Aboriginal community is currently the fourth highest in the world and is the major cause of mortality and morbidity. Of concern is that Aboriginal people generally choose not to use the diabetes services provided by mainstream health agencies. This study is quite significant because it is the first time in Australia that Aboriginal health workers (AHW) have undertaken a recognised diabetes course with other health professionals. The study will identify if any curricular changes need to be made to the course to ensure the AHW has the expertise to effectively meet the diabetes health care needs of the Aboriginal community. It will also indicate how the AHW perceives they might use their diabetes expertise within the Aboriginal community and the constraints that prevent the AHW from delivering optimum diabetes health care to Aboriginal people.
