Nurse Practitioner roles in the health workforce is the most significant development in the nursing workforce in recent times. In 1996 the Nurse Practitioner Project in South Australia was established to enable nurses to best serve their communities by functioning at an advanced level of practice. I was privileged to be the Minister's nominee on the Ministerial Advisory Committee. In following years I continued to work for the establishment of Nurse Practitioner roles. This interest led to my doctoral research into the scope of practice of self-employed nurse entrepreneurs.
Following completion of my PhD I undertook an extensive study into suicide postvention. My undergraduate and Masters studies were completed at Monash University.
My clinical experience was in both hospital and community nursing and encompassed adults, youth and children. Two highlights of my career were working as a paediatric flying nurse in the Kimberley Ranges of Western Australia and as a community midwife in Scotland.
