David Hilliard grew up in Auckland, New Zealand and studied at the University of Otago and the Australian National University. He taught history at Flinders University from 1967 until 2002. From 1997 to 2000 he was Associate Head (Academic) of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Since 2002 he has been an Adjunct Associate Professor. He has held visiting posts at the Australian National University, Yale Divinity School, the University of Leeds, the University of Queensland and Macquarie University.
