Fiona is a sociologist and a social worker with specialty expertise in the areas of community development and public policy. Fiona began her career in aged care and local government in the early 1980s, with a focus on community development and social planning. She has held management positions in community health and worked with the SA Council of Social Service in policy positions. As an academic she has taught and researched in areas of social policy (e.g. the impact of risk management on civil society, the uptake of Corporate Social Responsibility), community development and social planning. She has represented Flinders University on the Don Dunstan Foundation Board of Management and up until 2013 was an elected member of the Board of Management of SA Council of Social Service. Her most recent post at Flinders University was Dean, School of Social and Policy Studies.
