Susan Heyes is a registered general nurse with experiences in theatres with anaesthetics, scrub/scout, and interventional radiological procedures. Following her 1st Class Honours comprising of a qualitative study on the experiences of men going through prostate cancer screening, Susan won an Australian post-graduate award and a PhD candidature at Flinders University. Her PhD is a two-phase mixed methods study which investigated the experiences of couples and families as they go through the bladder cancer trajectory. This study led to the development of a new model of care for people diagnosed with bladder cancer and their partners and family, for use in urology settings.

As a researcher Susan has also worked on and End of Life Care Pathway on the Acute Ward, a nursing and medical model that gives nurses autonomy in the event of a dying patient with the focus being on the specific requirements of not only the dying patient but also the family care required. Additionally, Susan has worked on a six-month telephone follow-up study on the ACORN parenting course project for young mothers with mental health problems. Other research involves interviewing audiologists about their perspecitves of client care and interactions, and a complimentary therapies study.

Susan is a tutor in various undergraduate topics across all year levels and a post-graduate leadership topic. As a board member of the Sturt Honors Society of Nursing Susan is dedicated to the support of young nurses and student and their pursuit of leadership. She has served on various other committees and is also an ALLY representative within the school. Peer reviewing journals articles for Collegian, European Journal of Cancer Care,International Journal of Nursing Studies, and Urologic Nursing.

Key responsibilities

I have been teaching at the College of Nursing and Health Sciences since 2012. I teach in both Nursing and Health Sciences topic in all undergraduate year levels and a masters core topic. I am also involved in research that has included Bladder Cancer, Prostate Cancer, End of Life Care in an acute ward, Audiology, a Young Mothers with mental health disorders intervention, 6-month follow-up, and Complimentary Therapies.
